Get paid to speak in public

My friend Keith told a story about how he was first paid to speak in public.

He said that he joined Toastmasters and he hadn’t been in it very long when he was asked to speak, and be paid for it as well.

Keith loves rugby and was at his rugby club when one of the managers of the club said to him:

“Ah Keith, you speak in public don’t you”.

Keith said ” err yes I do speak in public”, so the manager said “we would like you to do a talk at the club, we will pay you for it. How long will it be then, about 45 minutes, you’re used to that sort of thing aren’t you?”

Keith said “err yeah, I am”, even though he had only just spoken at the most for seven minutes in a Toastmasters ice breaker speech, the first speech that you do at Toastmasters, and had never been paid to speak in public before.

So that’s how he got started, and that’s how he got into being paid for public speaking because a man came up to him and asked him to speak and he said “yes”.

He ended up speaking for 45 minutes and he had a bit of a question and answer session afterwards.

Since that time he has been paid to speak in public on many occasions and he estimates that his total earnings to date are between 100,000.00 and 150,000.00. What’s that? Say $150,000 to $200,000?

Speak in public and you get paid money!

Keith knew that he knew he wasn’t perfect, but as Jack Canfield would say, he just leaned into it, just lean into it and get going, it doesn’t have to be perfect, just do it.

Or as Anthony Robbins would say ‘Take massive action’ it’s the same thing, just do it.

Why Do People Need A Personal Development Plan

‘Men go abroad to wonder at the heights of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motions of the stars, and they pass by themselves without wondering.’ These are the words of St. Augustine who was neither a life coach nor a scientist and yet, how full of truth his words were.

The whole concept of a personal development plan relies on these words. Men take for granted what they are given by nature and they unconsciously assume that they know very well what they were given. Unfortunately, life is a lot more difficult these days and people soon discover that their only tool to succeed is themselves. They understand that they need an action plan to move on with their life within the context of career, education, and relationships. They need life coaching.

A personal development plan is part of life coaching and the two concepts are often times confused. People somehow imagine that a personal development plan is all it takes to get their life on the right tracks. They also forget that a PDP is not a way to get back on the tracks but it is a way to explore and discover the right tracks you should follow. Some people understand the need of life coaching in implementing a PDP, others don’t.

But why do people need a personal development plan or life coaching as a matter of fact? Well, essentially, they need such a plan because they feel that something is wrong with their life and something is not working properly for them. They do not know the answers to some simple questions:

— Do you know who you are and what you want most in your life?

— Are you aware of the special gifts which you were personally and uniquely endowed with?

— Can you identify the obstacles which prevent you from achieving your goals?

— Are you aware that there is a difference between you and the higher you?

Most people do not know the answers to these questions. Life coaching has the very role of identifying these answers accurately so that you can use them towards self improvement and personal achievement in all respects of your life. Life is simple when you know what solution to use for each specific problem but the solutions are within yourself and unless you know yourself you will confront life with the wrong solutions, making it more difficult than it already is.

A leadership development plan is a special part of personal development plan. More and more people become leaders and not necessarily because they choose to. Many assume that leadership is just something that you have or you don’t have. The fact is that even if this principle were true, how could you be sure that you don’t have it unless you’ve looked for it?

Life coaching is the only way to find out what you can do and how far you can go in your life. Knowing your limits, your strengths and your weaknesses, will reveal the path you need to take whether it is in your profession, personal life, or education.

One of the most terrifying things to do is to speak in front of a large group of people. But if you wish to be successful in your career, you should learn how to overcome your nervousness and anxiety. Public speaking is a skill that can actually be acquired by following some helpful tips.

Use Visual Aids

If you become nervous because the audience attention is focused on you, you should try using some visual aids like charts and video presentation. This way the attention is shifted away from you and you would feel less anxious.

Be Well-Prepared

One of the most important things you can do is to come to your speaking engagement well-prepared. This means that you have researched your topic and practiced the things you will be saying in front of these people. If you want you can practice with some friends so you would get honest evaluation on your speech. You should also try to get enough rest before the day of your speech so that you are alert and focused.

Try Relaxation Techniques

Before speaking, remove your nervousness through a couple of relaxing techniques such as deep breathing, stretching or meditating. Some people get relaxed by drinking a glass of water or listening to some music.

There are some people who feel extremely nervous and show signs of dizziness, nausea and sweating. This nervousness may even be translated as fear and can be removed using several treatments like psychotherapy and hypnotherapy.

Psychotherapy would usually involve counseling, which would help pinpoint the exact cause of your fear and anxiety. There maybe some events in the past which contributed the present situation. The sessions can last depending on your response to the treatment. It could take for as short as three months or as long as several years.

On the other hand, hypnotherapy is known to provide quicker results. The treatment usually involves hypnotism performed by a qualified individual. Depending on your problems with public speaking, hypnotherapy can rid you of your fears after one to five sessions and it is relatively cheaper.

Conquering your nervousness is actually the key to effective public speaking. If you did not learn to manage your anxiety and nervousness, it would not matter how well you have prepared for your speech. You will still end up tongue-tied, agitated and greatly embarrassed, which could have been avoided in the first place.
