Judge orders residents and city to come to agreement on partially collapsed building in Buffalo, New York

Thursday, June 19, 2008

Buffalo, New York —Judge Justice Christopher Burns of the New York State Supreme Court has ordered a halt to an emergency demolition on a 19th century stable and livery on 428-430 Jersey Street in Buffalo, New York that partially collapsed on Wednesday June 11, initially causing at least 15 homes to be evacuated. At least two homes remain evacuated.

Burns orders that both the city and the group Save The Livery (www.savethelivery.com) have to come to an agreement on what to do with the building, and try to work out ways of saving at least some portions if it including the facade, side walls and a lift tower. Save The Livery is comprised of concerned area residents who have grown to love the building’s historic and unique character. On June 14, they won a temporary restraining order to stop demolition. The court ruled that the city was only allowed to remove material in immediate danger to residents and pedestrians, but stated that the demolition could only be performed with “hand tools.” The court also ordered that any rubble which had fallen into neighboring yards when the building collapsed, to be removed.

“It is in the interest of the city to have a safe environment–but also important to maintain a sense of historical preservation,” stated Burns in his ruling. Burns has given the sides until tomorrow (Friday June 20) to come to an agreement and has ordered both parties to return to court at 9:30 a.m. (eastern time) “sharp.” Activists of Save The Livery urge supporters of the stable to “fill the courtroom” to show “continued and ongoing support.” The hearing is scheduled to take place at 25 Delaware Avenue in the Supreme Court building, 3rd Floor, trial part 19.

Currently the building is owned by Bob Freudenheim who has several building violations against him because of the buildings poor condition. He has received at least five violations in three months and residents who live near the building state that Freudenheim should be “100% responsible” for his actions. Many are afraid that if the building is demolished, Freudenheim’s charges of neglect will be abolished.

On June 17, developer and CEO of Savarino Companies, Sam Savarino was at the site of the stable, discussing the building with residents and preservationists. In 2006, Savarino proposed and planned The Elmwood Village Hotel, a ‘botique’ hotel on the Southeast corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues. The project was later withdrawn after residents filed a lawsuit against Savarino and the city. Wikinews extensively covered the story, and contacted Savarino for his professional opinion on the building.

“[I would] love to see it preserved. I was there to see if there was anything we could do to help, to see if anything can be salvaged. I just want to see the right thing happen, and so does the city,” stated Savarino to Wikinews who added that he was allowed inside the building for a brief period.

“The side walls are beyond repair. The roof has rotted and it could come down at any time,” added Savarino who also said that the building “below the second floor appears to be stable.” He also states that the back wall of the building, which borders several homes, appears to be intact.

“Eliminating the back wall could be a problem for the neighbors. It is not unreasonable to leave at least 12 feet” of the back wall standing, added Savarino.

Savarino did not say if he was interested in buying the property, but did state, “I am sure there are a couple of people interested” in buying the property. On Thursday, Buffalo News reported that a “businessman” might be interested in purchasing the property, though Wikinews is not able to independently confirm the report. Savarino says that with the property still slated for emergency demolition, a potential buyer could face tax fees of nearly US$300,000.

Freudenheim gave the city permission to demolish the building on Thursday June 12 during an emergency Preservation Board meeting, because he would not be “rehabilitating the building anytime soon.” Freudenheim, along with his wife Nina, were part-owners of the Hotel Lenox at 140 North Street in Buffalo and were advocates to stop the Elmwood Village Hotel. They also financially supported a lawsuit in an attempt to stop the hotel from being built. Though it is not known exactly how long Freudenheim has owned the stable, Wikinews has learned that he was the owner while fighting to stop the hotel from being built. Residents say that he has been the owner for at least 22 years.

The building was first owned by a company called White Bros. and was used as a stable for a farm which once covered the land around the building for several blocks. The Buffalo Fire Department believes the building was built around 1814, while the city property database states it was built in 1870. Servants and workers of the farm were housed inside resident quarters situated at the rear of the building on what is now Summer Street, but are now cottages where area residents currently reside. Some date as far back as 1829.

At about 1950, the stable was converted into an automobile body shop and gasoline station.A property record search showed that in 1950 at least four fuel storage tanks were installed on the property. Two are listed as 550 square feet while the other two are 2,000 square feet. All of the tanks are designated as a TK4, which New York State says is used for “below ground horizontal bulk fuel storage.” The cost of installing a tank of that nature according to the state, at that time, included the tank itself, “excavation and backfill,” but did not include “the piping, ballast, or hold-down slab orring.” It is not known if the tanks are still on the property, but residents are concerned the city was not taking the precautions to find out.

Chicago White Sox 5–4 Detroit Tigers Comerica Park

The Chicago White Sox scored a narrow 5–4 victory Monday against the Detroit Tigers after White Sox player A.J. Pierzynski scored a go-ahead run in extra innings. The go-ahead run gave the White Sox two extra runs.

“We’re just finding ways to win games. We’re battling. We’re not giving at-bats away,” Pierzynski, catacher for the White Sox, said after the game.

Though the White Sox led 3–2 in the fourth inning, Mark Kotsay got out at home plate when attempting to get the White Sox a fourth run. Later, Tiger Don Kelly scored a home run, pushing the Tigers up to a lead of 4–2. The homer had both Kelly and Miguel Cabrera scoring a run each. The White Sox also hit a run in the eighth inning.

Also notable was that rookie relief pitcher Chris Sale won his first game after pitching in the tenth inning. Sale, who is on the Sox, earned praise from Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen, who said “very, very pleasant surprise. Very, very nice.”

The White Sox are currently 3 1/2 games behind the Minnesota Twins in the American League Central Division in the MLB. The Sox currently has a record of 77 wins and 60 losses, and have won four games in a row. The Detroit Tigers are third in the Central Division with a record of 68–70, and are 13 games behind Minnesota.

The game was played in Comerica Park in Detroit. 32,924 people attended the game.

Bush addresses nation on economic crisis; Congress debates bailout

Thursday, September 25, 2008

United States President George W. Bush addressed the nation on the economic financial crisis from inside the White House saying the economic situation is “serious” and is “in danger” of becoming “a long and painful recession.”

“We are in the midst of a serious financial crisis and the federal government is responding with decisive action,” Bush said in his televised speech.

Bush called for the United States Congress to pass a US$700 billion bill intended to keep struggling companies afloat. He asked the two presidential candidates along with leaders from both parties of Congress to join him for a conference on Thursday.

Last Friday, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson called for a bailout plan that would allow for the United States government to purchase devalued mortgage backed securities, resulting from the subprime mortgage crisis, from troubled financial institutions. Paulson has said that the plan could cost up to $700 billion. Congressional leaders have said that some form of the plan will pass; however, there is considerable debate over several key issues.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said that Bush “believes it is important for the American people to fully understand the depth of the crisis in our financial markets, how that crisis affects them, and the urgent need to agree on a solution.” Bush has been criticized for waiting too long to speak in prime time.

John McCain suspended his campaign to return to Washington and work on the bailout bill. Barack Obama has called for another form of the bill to pass and said that Congress should not package the bailout bill with any other bills — such as an economic stimulus plan.

Meanwhile, Congress has held a second round of hearings on the proposed bailout bill. Paulson and Chairman of the Federal Reserve Ben Bernanke testified in front of the House Financial Services Committee. They felt it was a serious problem in need of an immediate solution.

Is, as some politicians have suggested, the bailout plan a “blank check”?
Add or view comments

Rep. Barney Frank, Chairman of House Financial Services Committee, says it is “clear” that the financial bailout bill will pass.

Director of the Congressional Budget Office Peter R. Orsza said while testifying before Congress that “ironically, the intervention could even trigger additional failures of large institutions, because some institutions may be carrying troubled assets on their books at inflated values.”

The bailout plan has been called a “blank check” by many, with members of both parties divided on the issue.

Using Reliable And Dependable Scales In Williamsport Is Critical For Business

byAlma Abell

Scales have been used since the development of commerce at least 5,000 years ago. Business must be able to weigh goods in order to function. Laboratories require scales that can give very precise measurements. Scientists, buyers and sellers must all be able to trust that the scale is accurate. False readings in commerce mean that someone is paying too much. Ultimately, higher prices end up with the consumer. Everyone has a vested interest in the use of only trustworthy scales.

Truck scales immediately come to mind when most people think of large scales. A fully loaded truck can weigh up to 80,000 pounds. Busy truck scales must be reliable and able to handle a lot of traffic in the worst weather conditions. Some businesses require portable scales or combination scales that can even weigh railcars. Forklift scales save companies money because properly equipped forklifts can pick up and weigh an item at the same time. Many businesses operate on very slim profit margins. Saving time translates to saving money and increasing productivity. Conveyor scales also save businesses time and money by consolidating steps. These scales can be used to increase efficiency in many ways.

Businesses routinely rely on maintenance agreements on their scales to ensure that the scales are always functioning properly. A professional scale technician will perform a number of tests, make any necessary adjustments or repairs, and provide a complete report. Scales should be routinely serviced on a pre-determined schedule. Many industries take advantage of renting scales. Business cycles often mean that a scale is needed during the busy period, but not at other times, making it more cost-efficient to rent scales as needed.

B & M Scale Inc. have been supplying effective weighing solutions to industry since 1990. They are available 24 hours a day, because their customers often operate 24 hours a day. When a scale requires service, their experienced technicians will be there within a day. Anyone considering the purchase of a scale is encouraged to call and discuss their weighing problem and receive a free quote for the best solution. Financing is available for the purchase of industrial and commercial scales. Anyone needing Scales in Williamsport can rely on this experienced, professional team.

Lobby groups oppose plans for EU copyright extension

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

The European Commission currently has proposals on the table to extend performers’ copyright terms. Described by Professor Martin Kretschmer as the “Beatles Extension Act”, the proposed measure would extend copyright from 50 to 95 years after recording. A vast number of classical tracks are at stake; the copyright on recordings from the fifties and early sixties is nearing its expiration date, after which it would normally enter the public domain or become ‘public property’. E.U. Commissioner for the Internal Market and Services Charlie McCreevy is proposing this extension, and if the other relevant Directorate Generales (Information Society, Consumers, Culture, Trade, Competition, etc.) agree with the proposal, it will be sent to the European Parliament.

Wikinews contacted Erik Josefsson, European Affairs Coordinator for the Electronic Frontier Foundation (E.F.F.), who invited us to Brussels, the heart of E.U. policy making, to discuss this new proposal and its implications. Expecting an office interview, we arrived to discover that the event was a party and meetup conveniently coinciding with FOSDEM 2008 (the Free and Open source Software Developers’ European Meeting). The meetup was in a sprawling city centre apartment festooned with E.F.F. flags and looked to be a party that would go on into the early hours of the morning with copious food and drink on tap. As more people showed up for the event it turned out that it was a truly international crowd, with guests from all over Europe.

Eddan Katz, the new International Affairs Director of the E.F.F., had come over from the U.S. to connect to the European E.F.F. network, and he gladly took part in our interview. Eddan Katz explained that the Electronic Frontier Foundation is “A non-profit organisation working to protect civil liberties and freedoms online. The E.F.F. has fought for information privacy rights online, in relation to both the government and companies who, with insufficient transparency, collect, aggregate and make abuse of information about individuals.” Another major focus of their advocacy is intellectual property, said Eddan: “The E.F.F. represents what would be the public interest, those parts of society that don’t have a concentration of power, that the private interests do have in terms of lobbying.”

Becky Hogge, Executive Director of the U.K.’s Open Rights Group (O.R.G.), joined our discussion as well. “The goals of the Open Rights Group are very simple: we speak up whenever we see civil, consumer or human rights being affected by the poor implementation or the poor regulation of new technologies,” Becky summarised. “In that sense, people call us -I mean the E.F.F. has been around, in internet years, since the beginning of time- but the Open Rights Group is often called the British E.F.F.

Tuesday, April 14, 2020

In February 2017, the Iranian Chess Federation announced two teenage chess players, Dorsa Derakhshani and her younger brother Borna Derakhshani, were banned from representing the national team. The federation announced their decision although Dorsa Derakhshani had previously decided and informed the chess federation she did not wish to play for Iran.

Dorsa Derakhshani is currently 21 years old and holds the International Master (IM) as well as Woman Grand Master (WGM) titles. Her brother, Borna, plays for the English Federation and holds the FIDE Master title.

Under the laws of Islamic Republic of Iran, hijab is a mandatory dress code. Her brother Borna Deraskhsani was banned for playing against Israeli Grand Master (GM) Alexander Huzman at the same tournament. Iran does not recognise the existence of Israel, and previously, Irani athletes have avoided playing against Israeli athletes.

Mehrdad Pahlavanzadeh, the president of the country’s chess federation, explained the decision to ban the players saying, “As a first step, these two will be denied entry to all tournaments taking place in Iran and in the name of Iran, they will no longer be allowed the opportunity to be present on the national team.” ((fa))Farsi language: ?????? ????? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??? ????? ?? ?? ???? ???????? ?? ?? ????? ? ?? ??? ????? ?????? ??????? ????? ??????? ? ???? ???? ???? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??????? ????. Memory Foam Mattress Need To I Get A Soft Or Firm Bed?

Submitted by: Seanjm Moon

Foam ILD is a measure (in pounds) of the resistance foam gives when a significant, flat plate is pushed into a block of foam 25% of its total depth. In other words, it measure how firm/soft the surface of a foam block feels. Higher ILD is firmer and decrease ILD is softer.

The support of a foam bed is expressed as “assistance appeal,” and is derived from 2 numbers: 25ILD and 65ILD. 25ILD measures the resistance at twenty five% of the depth of foam and 65ILD measures the resistance at 65% of the depth of a piece of foam. By dividing 25ILD into 65ILD, you get the support appeal. Support appeal tells you how properly a piece of foam will support you when you lay down on it. Will it maintain your spine in a neutral position, or will it fully compress and allow you hips sink too far into the mattress and bump on the tougher base layers?

Purchase What You Like It is turning out to be extra popular for stores to have ILD firmness values accessible at the retail level. This is useful when taking into consideration the beds from a person producer. But there is not an apples to apples to comparison between one manufacturer and another. Support appeal is not out there at the retail level, and once again, it would not guide compare and contrast beds in between different makers, so it’s not a superior comparison device.

The necessary issue to recognize is that both soft and firm latex or memory foam mattresses are able of offering optimal help. Foam firmness level is not a direct indicator of support. The one you selected will need to make you search ahead to heading to sleep at night time.

Study some specifics about firm and soft mattresses. Think about which sort is best for you!

Firm mattresses have no give. Due to the lack of more cushion, you can really feel the support process in the mattress far better, instead than when you lay on a person of the softer versions. Firm ones are not as secure to most individuals but they are for these who desire a more difficult sleeping surface area.

The plush soft mattresses boast an additional layer of plush on the major. There is no added layer of upholstery as there is in a pillow prime, so folks that decide on this style, feel nearer to the assistance method although in bed. It truly has a lot more give than the traditional firm type. Plush is perfect for people who appreciate a mattress that is softer than a common firm 1 without having all of the added upholstery. When it comes to soft mattresses, there are various various styles to decide on from at retailers.

The actually preferred pillow best mattress possesses an additional layer of upholstery on the top rated. The extra upholstery magnifies the comfort degree of the mattress. Due to the additional upholstery, when sleeping on a pillow best, you will not come to feel the support method as plainly. You will feel a lot more softness and cushion than anything, and still get to use the rewards of excellent back assistance. Shoppers that enjoy the comfort of additional upholstery along with the crucial back help ought to buy a pillow top rated.

The Euro Major Mattress gives you great back support.

Facebook Places launches in UK

Saturday, September 18, 2010

Facebook Places, a location-publicising service that was released in the United States in August, has now become available to users in the United Kingdom. The service was released in Japan earlier this week. Previously, some people in the UK who use Facebook’s iPhone application discovered that they were able to use the service.

This service allows individuals to publicise their location, or “check in”, in a way similar to the one used by Gowalla and Foursquare. Users of Facebook Places will be able to establish if any of their Facebook “friends” are or have been in the vicinity if both decide to “check in”. The service will become available to other parts of Europe “as soon as possible”, stated Michael Sharon, Facebook Places’ product manager.

Sharon commented: “We wanted to prepare a robust set of privacy controls. I’m really proud of what we’ve done with the Places privacy settings because they are unprecedented in the industry at this moment in time. We think Here Now [which shows users if other Facebookers are in the area] is a fantastic feature. It’s a great way to meet new interesting people, but we also know some people wouldn’t like to use the feature – they just want to share with friends or friends of friends – so we took care to turn it on for only some people. Some people explicitly let us know that they just want to share with a certain group so we changed the settings from the default for them – of course they can opt back in at a later time.”

“One of the major issues is the way that Facebook have implemented his functionality,” mentioned Trend Micro’s Rik Ferguson. Having had a trial use of the service upon its launch yesterday, Ferguson continued: “By default, users are opted in to the ability to be tagged by their friends, they are opted in to allowing their friends’ Facebook apps to access their location information, and they are opted in to allowing ‘non-friends’ checked-in to the same place to see their whereabouts. This is all backwards – this should be deployed on a purely opt-in basis and no information about my whereabouts should be posted without my explicit consent, every single time a post is made.”
