Iranian International Master Dorsa Derakhshani discusses her chess career with Wikinews

Tuesday, April 14, 2020

In February 2017, the Iranian Chess Federation announced two teenage chess players, Dorsa Derakhshani and her younger brother Borna Derakhshani, were banned from representing the national team. The federation announced their decision although Dorsa Derakhshani had previously decided and informed the chess federation she did not wish to play for Iran.

Dorsa Derakhshani is currently 21 years old and holds the International Master (IM) as well as Woman Grand Master (WGM) titles. Her brother, Borna, plays for the English Federation and holds the FIDE Master title.

Dorsa Derakhshani was banned since she did not wear a hijab, an Islamic headscarf, while competing at the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival in January 2017. Under the laws of Islamic Republic of Iran, hijab is a mandatory dress code. Her brother Borna Deraskhsani was banned for playing against Israeli Grand Master (GM) Alexander Huzman at the same tournament. Iran does not recognise the existence of Israel, and previously, Irani athletes have avoided playing against Israeli athletes.

Mehrdad Pahlavanzadeh, the president of the country’s chess federation, explained the decision to ban the players saying, “As a first step, these two will be denied entry to all tournaments taking place in Iran and in the name of Iran, they will no longer be allowed the opportunity to be present on the national team.” ((fa))Farsi language: ?????? ????? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??? ????? ?? ?? ???? ???????? ?? ?? ????? ? ?? ??? ????? ?????? ??????? ????? ??????? ? ???? ???? ???? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??????? ????. He further stated, “Unfortunately, something that should not have happened has happened and our national interest is paramount and we have reported this position to the Ministry of Sports.” ((fa))Farsi language: ????????? ?????? ?? ????? ????????? ?????? ??? ? ????? ??? ?? ?? ?? ???? ?????? ???? ? ?? ??? ???? ?? ?? ????? ???? ?? ????? ?????.

IM Dorsa Derakhshani, who currently studies at Saint Louis University in the United States and plays for the United States Chess Federation, discussed her chess career, time in Iran and the 2017 controversy, and her life in Saint Louis with a Wikinews correspondent.

Wikinews interviews U.S. Green Party presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney

Friday, March 7, 2008

Wikinews held an exclusive interview with Cynthia McKinney, one of the candidates for the Green Party nomination for the 2008 U.S. presidential election.

McKinney is a former Democratic Congresswoman from Georgia. She was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1992 and held her seat for ten years until being defeated by Denise Majette in 2002. She was the first ever African American woman from her state to be elected to Congress.

We asked her why she made the recent switch to the Green Party. She replied, “Due to the importance of environmental issues, Green issues are the issues of today. The Ten Key Values ofthe Green Party stress us getting along with each other in harmony with the planet that gives us life.”

When asked about how she would handle Iraq she replied, “I would instruct the Joint Chiefs to draw up a plan for the orderly withdrawal of all U.S. troops from the country. I would dismantle our military bases in the area, and I would also demand that U.S. andother international corporations relinquish any claims to Iraqi oil orother resources and withdraw as well.”

McKinney is running for president because, basically, she thinks that “it’s time that the people win”.

Computers and technology make our modern lifestyle more convenient, but they also create new risks like computer viruses and hacking. Many people want to enjoy the convenience of new technology, but they may not be aware of its problems.

WiMAX is being promoted in Taiwan by the Taipei Computer Association, the Industrial Technology Research Institute and the Ministry of Economic Affairs of the Republic of China. It is considered by some to be the communication standard for the next generation of mobile devices.

Some companies have analyzed potential security issues which threaten the success of WiMAX. But what have they found?

How To Select Grapes For Sale On Their Vines

byAlma Abell

Before buying grapes, you need to understand a little about them. Specific grapes grow in specific regions very well. Whenever you find grape vines for sale, whether online or in a nursery, a good description should tell you what zone the grapes will grow in.

Zone Rating

Special detailed maps will show you the zones and how they are divided. This will help you compare your area with the plant. For example, a plant with a zone of five to nine means that in zone five, six, seven, eight or nine, the plant will grow appropriately.

To find your zone rating number, you will need to speak with your USDA Extension Service in your county. If their location is local, you may be able to visit them and see the maps. Otherwise, they may send you copies of the map. If you don’t need to see proof, they can easily tell you your zone numbers over the telephone.

Growing Season

You will also need to know the average growing season in your region. This will help you choose which type of grapes to buy. In most climates, grape vines should be planted in spring, but use your judgment.

The growing season goes along with the zone rating, as well. Most grape vine sellers will tell you the zone rating number on the grape. Choose one that is compatible with your area, and then you can easily find growing season information on those particular grape vines.

Type of Wine

If you are growing grapes strictly to make your own wine, then you will also need to take that into consideration. One of the best types of grapes is the Vitis Vinifera, which is the common grape. This is used in most of the world’s wine and comes in both red and white varieties. It usually requires a hot climate with a mild winter, but it is possible to grow it almost anywhere in North America.

Types of wines you can make with the Vitis vinifera include Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel and Pinot Noir.

Another great choice of grape is the Concord grape and its affiliates. These can grow in the northeastern areas of the United States and in Canada. Some people believe that these grapes add a musky taste to wines, though for home brewing, this may not be a problem.

The Positive Aspects Of Parenting Workshops

The Positive Aspects Of Parenting Workshops

by

Brad James

In the old days, almost all mothers and fathers acquired their know-how and perfected their competencies solely through experience. However, nowadays, there are countless partners who are becoming fathers and mothers and finding it very hard because of their inexperience and also their desire to know all about being great mums and dads for their children. If you’re a parent and are having a difficult time raising your girl or boy, you will come across many child-rearing programmes that are helpful for both new and seasoned moms and dads and will give you the wisdom that you really need.

You and your husband or wife could enroll in either internet-based or offline parenting courses to acquire more information regarding proper child rearing. Seminars are normally held by fellow dads and mums and also experts like physicians, pediatricians and psychiatrists. Many traditional child-rearing workshops are done in locations like neighborhood centers, schools and government buildings, and may or may not solicit a modest fee. Parenting workshops like these will have gatherings 1 or 2 times every week and assemble the other dads and mums living in the neighbourhood. You and your better half could then share your tips and other information with these dads and moms. However, if you are very busy and can’t find the time to leave your home and boys and girls, you could attend web-based parenting workshops. These seminars can be taken at any time and can be comprised of either group or one-on-one sessions. Like offline parenting programmes, the online variant might be free or require a small signup fee. Among the biggest themes that parenting courses would examine is the many different parenting strategies that you can use. Most fathers and mothers will wind up formulating their own child-rearing approaches, but their results would vary according to how their kids respond to them. To illustrate, a handful of spouses are inclined to have a more aloof parenting technique which prioritises words instead of actions to deal with household matters. When this child-rearing strategy fails, these folks will look for other methods and ways to care for their daughters and sons and demonstrate their love and affection better. Parenting courses would give you extensive information on how to cater to your children’s requirements without spoiling them. Nearly all child-rearing classes will look into how you can raise an infant or youngster. Babies would require an increased amount of care and attention, along with very precise child-rearing know-how. Brand-new mothers and fathers would definitely gain from these child-rearing programmes, specially when they can’t get useful information from their family members, good friends and co-workers. For spouses who’ve got tykes, signing up for courses would give them points of view that they haven’t thought about and help them deal with concerns such as implementing disciplinary measures and offering rewards. Moms and dads should not rush when learning everything they can about fatherhood or motherhood and determining which approaches work for them and their sons and daughters. Even if it’s a fact that parenting programs would give you incredibly useful information and facts, you can’t expect everything you have gleaned to deliver instant results. Constructing stronger relationships and ironing out all household troubles will take time, and not all discussed child-rearing approaches would work in your situation. Adequate training from parenting programs will enable you to care for a sick girl or boy, handle difficult emotional instances and cope with adolescents’ drama (among other things), but you must also be aware of what your children’s eccentricities and inclinations are in order to make those child-rearing strategies work. Additionally, child-rearing seminars will help you and your husband or wife improve your relationship and also get to know each other better. The courses will offer you the opportunity to come together and agree on what you should and shouldn’t do when going through a particular issue. Unity is vital when looking after kids; if they sense any discord in your partnership and parenting approach, they could exploit it or form psychological or emotional problems that might have an effect on them all the way to their adult years. Parenting workshops would enable you to build a much better home life and assist other parents in accomplishing exactly the same thing! Joining child-rearing programmes could make all the difference, specially in scenarios wherein mothers and fathers think that they must enhance their child-rearing skills. You could also interact with other fathers and mothers through these seminars and help one another solve your child-rearing concerns!

Imperfect immune systems help avoid autoimmune disease

Thursday, September 15, 2005

The body’s immune system is less effective at quashing disease than it could be – but if it were better the immune system might do more harm than good, according to new research by Michael Deem and colleagues of Rice University in Houston.

The immune system has apparently evolved to be mildly inefficient so that it achieves a balance between quick response to disease and decreased probability of autoimmune disease, a condition in which the immune system attacks healthy tissue.

The authors drew their conclusions from a model of the dynamics of antibody evolution. Their simulations show that while there are mechanisms that would allow the immune system to develop antibodies that respond faster and more strongly against invading pathogens, those mechanisms would also create antibodies that are likely to attack the body’s own healthy cells. The model also bolsters controversial suggestions that chronic infections could lead the immune system awry, ultimately resulting in rheumatoid arthritis or other autoimmune ailments.

The study will be detailed in a forthcoming issue of the journal Physical Review Letters.
