Peter Andren, Australian MP dies aged 61

Sunday, November 4, 2007

Australian federal member of Calare, Peter Andren died on Saturday after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He was aged 61.

Mr Andren who had held the seat since being elected in 1996 had previously announced his intention to run for the senate after his electorate was changed for the 2007 federal election. After Mr Andren was diagnosed with cancer in July, he announced that he would be retiring from politics at the election.

Mr Andren’s 1996 campaign platform was based upon retaining services in regional Australia, particularly banking, health and telecommunications. Over the next 11 years, Mr Andren’s primary vote grew and at the 2001 and 2004 elections was elected without preferences, achieving a majority primary vote.

In 2001, Mr Andren disagreed with his electorate on refugees. The electorate supported the government’s tough stance but Mr Andren could not support the government’s border protection measures. Following this, a vicious letter-box campaign rose up saying “you might like Peter Andren … but you won’t like what he’s got to say about keeping our borders safe”.

Fellow NSW independent member, Tony Windsor said Mr Andren’s stance on asylum seekers was just one sign of his compassion and strong belief in human rights.

Mr Windsor described Mr Andren as the “conscience” of parliament. “Peter Andren was a true representative of the people of the Calare electorate, a man of the highest integrity and the conscience of the Parliament,” he said.

“He was subjected to vitriol from time to time within the Parliament over issues, but if he believed in something he stuck to it. He didn’t compromise and I think that’s a lasting legacy that Peter will leave.”

Prime Minister John Howard said despite having a difference of opinion with Mr Andren on many issues, he had a lot of respect for him.

“I respected his skills as a local member,” he said.

“Mr Andren and I frequently disagreed on major issues and he made no bones about that and I made no bones about it either but that didn’t stop me respecting him and acknowledging the tremendous work he did for his electorate.”

Labor leader Kevin Rudd described Mr Andren as a true independent.

“Peter Andren will be a great loss to the Australian parliament,” he said.

“He was a man of principle, a man of commitment, a man who was an absolute independent.”

Leader of the Greens, Bob Brown said Mr Andren was an example of how a politician should be.

“He was an exemplar of representative politics for his electorate and the people of Calare kept returning him with a bigger and bigger majority,” he said.

“[If] anybody ever asks me how a politician should be, I am going to say, ‘Look at the record of Peter Andren'”

“He was a great Australian representative and he is a great loss to this country.”

During his political career, Mr Andren fought the sale of Telstra, introduced a bill to allow MPs to opt-out of their generous superannuation schemes, opposed the Iraq war and campaigned on environmental issues.

Mr Andren was born at Gulargambone, near Dubbo in Western NSW in 1946. Before he entered politics Mr Andren worked as a teacher before moving into journalism. Mr Andren worked as a news producer in Sydney for the Seven and Nine networks, before moving back to regional NSW where he worked as the news editor for both Radio 2GZ and Prime Television.

Mr Andren is survived by his partner and two sons.

US undergraduate commits suicide after ‘outing’ via webcast

Tyler Clementi, eighteen, a freshman at Rutgers University in the United States, jumped off the George Washington Bridge last Wednesday after roommates broadcast his same-sex encounters online.

Clementi shared a room with Dhraun Ravi, in Davidson Hall on Rutgers’ Piscataway campus.

On September 19, Dhraun Ravi is alleged to have secretly activated a webcam in their room, then retreated down the hall to the room of his childhood friend, Molly Wei, where they used Skype to connect to the live video feed of Clementi having sex. Ravi tweeted, “Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into molly’s room and turned on my Web cam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay”.

Clementi reported the incident to the university, and that information has been passed to the authorities, according to Gregory Blimling, university vice president for student affairs.

Ravi attempted to repeat his actions on the following Wednesday, after seeing his roommate kissing a teenaged boy. Writing on Facebook he said, “Anyone with iChat, I dare you to video chat me between the hours of 9:30 and 12. Yes, it’s happening again.”

The following Wednesday, at around 4 p.m., fellow freshman Lauren Garcia saw Clementi leaving the dormitory. “He had his iPod in his ear, and just had this blank stare on his face,”, she said. Clementi drove one hour along the New Jersey Turnpike, abandoning his car on the Jersey side. Writing a final message on his own Facebook page saying, “Jumping off the gw bridge sorry”, he left a wallet containing his driver’s licence and Rutgers ID card, and his mobile phone on the roadside. According to witnesses, he scaled the railings, crouched down, and jumped at approximately 8:50 p.m— about eight minutes after his Facebook posting. Those details were relayed to press anonymously by a law enforcement official.

One of the anonymous witnesses, a 45-year-old from West New York, said “It was so quick, as soon as he saw us, he went. He didn’t give us an opportunity to do anything.”

New York Police Department’s Harbour Unit recovered a body of a young man yesterday, in the Hudson River to the North of the bridge, but it has not yet been positively identified.

Ravi and Wei, both eighteen, were charged with invasion of privacy. Wei voluntarily surrendered to police Monday, and was released on her own recognizance; Ravi surrendered the following day, and has been released on $25,000 bail. All three students started their courses in August.

The crime of “transmitting sexual images” is a 3rd degree felony, carrying a maximum prison sentence of five years.

Clementi, from Ridgewood, New Jersey, played the violin, and was a member of the Ridgewood High School chamber orchestra. A student from the same hall described him as quiet and shy. His parents were apparently unaware of his sexuality; Robert Righthand, a friend of Clementi since grade school, said “he had it in reserve for a very long time […] You never thought he was depressed. You just thought he was quiet. He wasn’t the person to open up to a lot of people.”

A gathering of around 100 people held a vigil on Wednesday, chanting slogans such as “We’re here, we’re queer, we’re not going home.”

The Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays organization announced a “call to action” today. Stephen Goldstein, of LGBT advocacy organization Garden State Equality, said, “[Clementi,] by all accounts, was brilliant, talented and kind […] we are sickened that anyone in our society, such as the students allegedly responsible […] might consider destroying others’ lives as a sport.”

On Wednesday prior to the incident, the university launched “Project Civility”, a two-year campaign encouraging students to be thougtful of others. The University president, Richard McCormick, issued a letter stating that “If the charges are true, these actions gravely violate the university’s standards of decency and humanity.”

Chicago Transit Authority announces repairs to Blue and Red Line

Wednesday, July 11, 2007

Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) riders on the subway portions of the Red and Blue lines may see relief of the slow zone in the coming months. So-called “slow zones” are locations where trains travel at restricted speeds because of track work or deteriorating conditions.

The CTA is putting nearly US$15 millions towards renovation of the O’Hare to Clark/Lake portion of the Blue Line and Chicago to Belmont portions of the Red Line. Work will happen during off peak and overnight hours. The CTA says that one track operations and delays may occur.

“We have heard our customers’ frustration with slow zones and today we are acting to address their concerns,” said Chicago Transit Board chairperson Carole Brown. “I am pleased that we are able to leverage existing contracts to begin this work and I look forward to working with state lawmakers to increase transit investment to bring our entire system to a state of good repair.”

Japan to use renewable energy

Tuesday, August 16, 2011

A new law which seeks to utilise reusable energy and minimise cost impact on consumers is under development in Japan. The new law, which would be effective from July 1 next year, would seek to reduce Japan’s dependency on nuclear power.

The new legislation would urge power utilities to cut costs by purchasing renewable energy from outside companies and private businesses. Japan’s decision has been referred to as opening the door on renewable energy, which currently only contributes to six percent of Japan’s energy sources.

Politicians have amended the bill, allowing the revised bill to pass through parliament later this month. Prime Minister Naoto Kan who is pushing for the bill to be passed in return for his resignation, has stated that the ‘feed-in-tariff on renewable energy will be set at a fixed price so that utilities are limited to purchasing electricity from renewable power generators. Kan hopes that this will encourage more business and private corporate partners to enter into the renewable energy market.

“As a medium-term revolutionary energy and environmental strategy, we have decided to start a thorough review of nuclear power policy and draw a roadmap for a reduction of the dependence on nuclear power” Mr Kan said.

Large companies are concerned about the new legislation as it will continue to affect profit margins which are low due to power shortages and high priced exports. The bill was changed to reduce the surcharge for large power companies after complaints from the Japanese steel industry. If the scheme is launched then consumers will face an increase on electricity bills as utilities can pass their costs onto end-users. Despite the governments promise to cap the surcharge for the next ten years, there is no reference to it in the revised bill.

Lawmakers hope that by adding a provision requiring utilities to streamline their operations, the impact on consumers will be minimized.

A third party group will be set up within the under the Agency for National Resources and Energy to ensure that the setting of fixed prices are fair and just.

International Hot Money Is Still Influx Emerging Economies}

Submitted by: Lanbo Jiang

In the period after the financial crisis, international capital flows shows the characteristics of some new changes, the net direct investment, international capital flows accounted for the proportion gradually decreased from 80% to 50% of the developed countries the risk in the global asset allocation, long-term and short-term international capital flows to emerging again from the developed economies.

Currently, the United States and Europe and Japan cut interest rates sharply after the major developed countries, interest rates remain low, while the emerging economies, interest rates are higher than developed countries. Thus, continuing the recent influx of arbitrage funds in emerging economies, in this context, the 2009 Asia 35 billion U.S. dollars of net capital inflow in 2010, the net inflow of Asian capital will be higher than in 2009; a number of emerging economies to become the object of international hot money race , including the stock and property markets, including the asset bubble was rapidly enlarged. In 2009, in the “BRIC” markets in Bombay Sensex index rose 81%, Sao Paulo, Brazil IBOVESPA index rose 82.7%, the Russian RTS index was up 128.8 percent, while Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Argentina and other emerging markets rose are more than 60%, while the U.S. Dow Jones stock index rose only 18.8%.

With the economic recovery, economic stimulus plan implementation and the influx of outside capital, emerging economies are also rising property prices. Brazil since 2009 house prices began to sharply risen in the capital, Brasilia, Average price was 6,600 U.S. dollars / square meter; Moscow now Average price was 5,320 U.S. dollars / m, New Delhi for the 1400 U.S. dollars / square meter.

In addition, Vietnam and India, two Asian emerging economies also face inflationary pressure. Vietnam’s economic growth rate in 2010 will reach 8.2%, CPI will reach 10.8%, showing the gradual rising trend. India’s wholesale price index for food has nearly the highest in 11 years.

To promote the continued influx of international hot money in emerging economies are the following factors:

First, the easy monetary policy to provide a financing platform for international hot money. As the major Western central banks interest rates close to zero, and cross-border pursuit of profit of capital into the stock market, real estate market, there is the expected appreciation of assets in emerging economies, capital markets, as excess liquidity into the ground.

Second, the emerging economies of industrialization and urbanization led to asset price inflation, international hot money intermediate arbitrage.

Third, the lack of flexibility in emerging economies, exchange rate regime, in response to weak performance of international hot money shocks. Most emerging economies to implement exchange controls, its foreign exchange market does not have a floating exchange rate system, the automatic adjustment mechanism, and therefore can not automatically rise with the exchange rate impact response of international hot money.

Through international capital markets and commodity markets and other channels of international hot money on the implementation of arbitrage activities in emerging economies, emerging economies inevitably generated a lot of adverse effects. It features: First, the inflow of foreign capital will enable the local currency in the short term to face greater pressure to appreciate. In a floating exchange rate countries, the rapid appreciation of the currency would be a great impact on the national economy, in countries with fixed exchange rates, monetary authorities tend to enter the foreign exchange market intervention rate, which also requires a fairly high cost. Second, the hot money out of state would seriously interfere with the implementation of macroeconomic policy, monetary policy, restricting the independence of the central bank to increase the monetary policy more difficult.

In addition, the process of rapid economic growth, many emerging economies, enterprises in New York, London and Hong Kong Stock Exchange. With the intensification of international capital flows, emerging economies to expand the scale of overseas listed companies and international capital markets and interactive effects of increased interest rates in emerging economies, asset price inflation and other factors, enterprises listed overseas will affect stock prices so that the underlying assets held by international investors from arbitrage. In early 2009, before the international hot money on the world economic recovery, re-enter the commodity markets, international hot money through participation in commodity futures markets to benefit. Hot money into the international commodity market, it is easy to push up commodity prices, caused by asset price bubbles, so that emerging economies face imported inflation pressures. Meanwhile, the hot money to enter the capital market and real estate market, so that the asset bubble in the high and further upstream, resulting in structural distortions in investment and consumption. Carry out the international hot money flows reversed, it will damage the economy.

Finland offers helicopters, personnel to assist Greece with forest fires

Monday, August 27, 2007

The government of Finland has announced it will offer to send three specialist firefighting helicopters, 25 firefighters and 2-3 forest fire experts to Greece via the European Union to assist with the forest fire emergency Greece is currently experiencing.

Greece is currently in urgent need of fixed-wing aircraft with water-bombing capabilities, assets which Finland does not posses. If the Greek authorities deem Finland’s offers to be suitable, they will be dispatched with immediate effect, within six hours of Greece requesting the rotorcraft and personnel.

It is thought that the men would most likely be put to use protecting built-up areas in an attempt to prevent the death toll, already over 60, from rising any higher.

The helicopters have been sourced via a private company. Finland said that the country could not commit to send the aircraft any sooner without arrangements being made to cover their removal from service, as otherwise safety in Finland would be severely jeopardised, with emergency aircraft unavailable should Finland experience any fires of its own.

The helicopters Finland have available can each carry up to 800 litres of water or foam retardant, whereas large firefighting planes can carry tens of thousands of litres.

Finland had previously thought they would be unable to spare any help for Greece, and it was only after much sourcing of aircraft from the private sector that Finland was able to make the offer. Finland are also looking into whether they may be of assistance in reforestation efforts after the fires have been extinguished.

Venezuela opens granite processing facility in Bolívar

Monday, February 18, 2013

Venezuela’s government has opened a granite processing plant in the state of Bolívar, with the intention of providing about 25% of the granite required nationwide.

Ricardo Menéndez, vice president of the Productive Economic Area, said Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez has yearned for the creation of this project to empower Venezuelan construction. Granito Bolívar is reportedly the most modern Venezuelan granite plant, not consuming community water or electricity, and is also the largest, with a daily capacity to supply enough material for use in construction of about 820 houses.

Menéndez said, “These granite blocks are the natural resources of our country, are the wealth we have as a country and often [some] simply decided to remove this richness from our country and take them to other countries” ((es))Spanish language: ?Esos bloques de granito son la riquezas naturales de nuestro país, son las riquezas que tenemos como patria y que muchas veces sencillamente esas riquezas decidieron sacarlas de nuestro territorio nacional y llevarlas a otros países.

According to Menéndez, with the help of a state plan, Venezuela intends to exploit its 40,000 million cubic meters or more of granite reserves, generating a set of factories. “[T]he central theme is that these plants, all these factories, are for the construction of socialism; that means using our potential, develop the value chain within the country and of course that yields benefits from the point of view of the production system’s organization…. [Granito] Bolívar is not only the vision that historically we had of exposing richness, but the industries, basic industries we have, that level of our workers in the basic industries and in addition the development of the potential we have in the state” ((es))Spanish language: ?el tema central es que estas plantas todas estas fábricas son para la construcción del socialismo, eso significa utilizar nuestras potencialidades, dessarrollar la cadena de valor dentro del país y por supuesto que eso genere beneficios desde el punto de vista de la organización del sistema productivo …

For the construction of the plant, supplied by 23 quarries, the government of Bolívar provided about 30 million bolívares (US$4.7 million) and the national government €2.3 million (US$3 million). Bolívar reportedly has reserves of about 40,000 million tons of red, black, pink and white granite, sufficient for domestic demand for 200 years.

Edmund White on writing, incest, life and Larry Kramer

Thursday, November 8, 2007

What you are about to read is an American life as lived by renowned author Edmund White. His life has been a crossroads, the fulcrum of high-brow Classicism and low-brow Brett Easton Ellisism. It is not for the faint. He has been the toast of the literary elite in New York, London and Paris, befriending artistic luminaries such as Salman Rushdie and Sir Ian McKellen while writing about a family where he was jealous his sister was having sex with his father as he fought off his mother’s amorous pursuit.

The fact is, Edmund White exists. His life exists. To the casual reader, they may find it disquieting that someone like his father existed in 1950’s America and that White’s work is the progeny of his intimate effort to understand his own experience.

Wikinews reporter David Shankbone understood that an interview with Edmund White, who is professor of creative writing at Princeton University, who wrote the seminal biography of Jean Genet, and who no longer can keep track of how many sex partners he has encountered, meant nothing would be off limits. Nothing was. Late in the interview they were joined by his partner Michael Caroll, who discussed White’s enduring feud with influential writer and activist Larry Kramer.

 • Get More Information Here:
 • Tdl Law

An uncontested divorce is a divorce in which both sides might accept to the terms of the divorce. By having an uncontested divorce, both parties settle the terms of the divorce without court process. One lawyer represents one of the parties and works on the divorce documents. Generally speaking, the lawyer will meet with the party they are representing and start the divorce proceedings. The parties negotiate the terms until both parties are contented. There are lots of things that needs to be agree upon to be able to arrive at a mutually approved settlement so that you will have to be able to file uncontested divorce forms. Though property division could be high on your mind, child custody and also the future of your kids is one factor you should devote a lot of time to. If you do not treat it in a practical way it could become a hindrance into your plan to file uncontested divorce forms. The first thing to consider is that you’ve agreed to be on a similar platform as your partner and have to walk that extra mile for a mutual settlement to help you file uncontested divorce forms. It has been observed that a lot of parents make child custody a pride concern and turn down to listen to good advice.

An uncontested divorce is considerably cheaper compared to going to court. If you possibly can settle the terms of the divorce agreement prior to contacting legal counsel to begin the divorce proceedings, the cost is minimal. It saves time for everyone involved. When dealing with a divorce, lowering costs is a great benefit. An uncontested divorce may also help maintain a level of calmness between the parties. If the parties to the divorce have an amiable relationship, i suggest you try to save that mutual respect, particularly if there are children involved. One more benefit is the privateness that an uncontested divorce provides contrary to court procedures. The divorce will be a matter of public record, however the awareness of the negotiations and the actions taken is often times confidential and restricted by what the parties disclose in the documents.

One thing that you need to realize is that if you do not file uncontested divorce forms and choose to contest on the issue of child custody the judge will make the decision. And that may not necessarily be in your favor. The judge has particular pre-set standards based on what s/he decides and passes an order in regards to child custody. These criteria include age of the child, emotional ties among child and parents and grandparents which can be provide for the child. Usually financial ability of a parent to provide for the child may possibly take priority over emotional attachment.

Do your research well and then try to determine what particularly do sole and joint, physical and legal custody, and visitation rights means. Somewhere unknown in the meanings you’ll surely get the arrangement that you want. And more importantly, do not ever make child custody a pride issue but arrive at an settlement which is efficient as well as assures the future of your children.
