Kiribati acquires international funding for solar power

Tuesday, March 26, 2013

Last Tuesday, AusAID Australia and the World Bank’s Global Environment Fund (GEF) reached an agreement to give the government of Kiribati US$5 million (AU$4,779,000, NZ$5,985,000, €3,885,000) to install solar panels around the country capital, located on the Tarawa atoll. According to Business Desk of the Brunei Times, AusAID promised AU$3.2 million in funding, while GEF promised US$1 million. The country was the first in the Pacific to make a deal with the World Bank.

The funding was part of a US$530 million (NZ$635 million) package announced at yesterday’s Pacific Energy Summit in Auckland involving New Zealand and the European Union, Australia, the Asian Development Bank, the European Investment Bank, the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the World Bank Group, and the United Arab Emirates. Also at the summit yesterday, New Zealand’s Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully had announced a national commitment of USD$54,262,000 (AU$51,861,000 NZ$65 million, €42,178,000) to Pacific region energy solutions, of which US$8,348,000 (AU$8 million, NZ$10 million, €6,483,000) would be specifically earmarked for renewable energy and improved energy efficiency in the Cook Islands, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga, and Tuvalu.

Kiribati is heavily dependent on diesel fuel for most of the energy available on the national power grid, which supplies power to half Kiribati’s population of 110,000. In addition, a third of the country’s population lacks access to electricity. Once installation of the solar panels is complete, they are estimated to reduce diesel consumption by 230,000 liters (60,760 gallons) a year and give access to the electricity to some parts of the population that currently have no electricity. The European Union already has committed €100 million to sustainable energy in the region, with €10 million of that coming as a result of an announcement made last week.

In a press release about the news, Kiribati President Anote Tong was quoted as saying, “Kiribati faces big challenges it is remote, it is at risk from the effects of climate change, and it is vulnerable to economic shocks. […] Shifting Kiribati’s focus to reliable solar energy will provide a more secure, more sustainable power source for the country’s people.” Radio New Zealand International quoted Tong as saying, “It’s the first time we are doing this. We’re excited at the prospect of even substituting fossil fuel to a small extent at this stage. What the system being envisaged will only produce around 500 kilowatts, but this is the beginning of what I hope will be a pattern, the trend in the future.”

The European Union’s Fiji-based head of operations for the Pacific region, Renato Mele, supported alternative energy solutions like solar power for the region, but said that solar power had limitations because climate and environmental conditions sometimes meant batteries required to power the panels had a life of only 12 months, compared to other climates where batteries normally last five years. This created the potential to drive up standard operating costs. Mele has also noted these additional costs though are still lower than the cost of diesel power.

One News Pacific Correspondent Barbara Dreaver noted, “Governments will be able to put the money they (currently) spend on diesel into things like education and health.”

Why Repairing A Sprinkler System Repair In Spokane Wa Matters

byAlma Abell

As with just about anything around the house, it is possible for a sprinkler system to sustain some type of damage. When this happens, it is important to make sure the Sprinkler System Repair in Spokane WA takes place in a timely manner. Here are some of the reasons why this is the case. Increased Wear and TearWhen one part of the Sprinkler System Repair in Spokane WA is not working properly, it can interfere with the function of other parts. Over time, this leads to more stress and pressure on those other components. What started out as a simple repair can blossom into a major problem that requires a lot of time and money to resolve. A better approach is to take care of the minor repair quickly, and avoid having to deal with more issues later on.

Wasting Resources Depending on the nature of the damage to the system, the homeowner may also be wasting resources. For example, a damaged sprinkler head or two may end up using more water during operation, and fail to evenly distribute the water across the expanse of the lawn. This means some areas get saturated while others are left dry. Along with damaging the lawn, this also leads to using more water. That in turn means a higher water bill with no benefits to show for that extra expense. In like manner, damages pipes or hoses that connect the sprinklers will mean a lot of water is wasted during operation. With an in ground system, that excess water seeps into the ground and could lead to too much moisture for the grass. As spots begin to die, there will be the need to replace the dead grass with new sod. A better approach is to have the pipes repaired or replaced and keep the lawn looking great.

For homeowners who want To Know More about the proper care and maintenance of a sprinkler system, talk with a home and garden expert. That expert can provide tips on how to determine if there is something wrong with the system, and how to resolve those issues quickly. Read more about Spokane Pro Care!

Swiss mountaineer Erhard Loretan dies in climbing accident

Saturday, April 30, 2011

Acclaimed Swiss mountaineer Erhard Loretan died Thursday on his 52nd birthday when he fell in a climbing accident.

According to Swiss police, Loretan was climbing with a client to the summit of Gruenhor, a 4,043 meter peak in the Bernese Alps, when both fell for unknown reasons from a height of around 3,800 metres. He was killed immediately while his client was hospitalized in serious condition.

Loretan, originally from Fribourg, was eleven years old when he began climbing. In 1982, he climbed his first 8,000-meter peak, Nanga Parbat in Pakistan. He was the third person to summit all fourteen of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks, which he accomplished by the age of 36. This confirmed his reputation as one of the world’s top mountain climbers. In 1986 he ascended Mt. Everest in 40 hours without using supplementary oxygen, a feat that astonished other mountain climbers.

Saying that he was essentially a solitary person, he told a Trento film festival in a video posted on its web site last year, “First of all I’d like to thank the mountains, for almost 40 years they have allowed me to climb, and with this passion I’ve lived an extraordinary life up to now, that’s why I’d like to thank them.”

He added, “I now want to share this passion more with others, and it’s because of this that being a mountain guide is a good profession because you can help someone who dreams about climbing mountains. This is something very beautiful.”

In 2001 his personal life was marred by a manslaughter charge for shaking to death his seven-month old son to stop him from crying. He plead guilty in 2003 and received a four-month suspended sentence. The case ignited a debate in Switzerland over shaking babies.

Plumbers Do More Than Just Drains

byadmin

For any person living in a coastal area such as Boca Raton, one of the most important things to have available is a handy and reliable plumber. Coastal areas are always susceptible to plumbing issues because drainage is always a problem. Logically there are not many places that the water can go because there is a lack of elevation.

Preventative Maintenance

One of the most common plumbing issues in coastal areas is drainage backup. Now there are a number of ways to remedy the issue. First and foremost is to always maintain the drains within a home or building. For maintenance, the best thing to do is to purchase household drain cleaning products and apply them to the drains on a regular basis.

The typical drain cleaning products that are available in most stores and home improvement centers contain a combination of sodium hydroxide, sodium nitrate, sodium chloride, aluminum, and a few other undisclosed ingredients. When poured into a drain these products act as a cleaner to scrape away any build up and thus clearing the drains for perfect flow.

Calling a Professional

In some cases, the regular maintenance procedures are just not enough. That is when a person just needs to call a Plumber Boca Raton. These licensed professionals have more expertise and plumbing tools at their disposal to determine the exact plumbing problem and fix it right away. The plumber can use a camera to see inside the drain so that they can located exactly where the clog or back up is.

Once the clogged or backed up area of the drain has been located, a plumber in Boca Raton can then use his or her professional plumbing tools to effective remove or clean the drain thoroughly. This might mean a simple scraping of the inside of the drain with a motorized steel brush or it may involve newer technologies like water jetting.

Water jetting is actually a safer and more effective way of cleaning the clogged or backed up drains that the old way of using steel rotating brush. The extra pressure that the water jet can create will loosen the debris more effectively and actually at a faster rate. The result is that it takes less time to clean the drain, which in the end saves the customer money too.

Overall, in Boca Raton it is important to locate a good and reliable Plumber. Once one has been found it is very wise to keep their contact information close by. Plumbing emergencies can arise in an instant and typically require immediate attention. Having a plumber’s contact information ready at all time can save a person from having to cope with an absolute disaster.

SpaceX scrubs Falcon I rocket launch

Monday, November 28, 2005

SpaceX called off the much-delayed inaugural launch of their new Falcon 1 rocket on Saturday from Kwajalein’s Omelek Island launch site. The intent was to launch the U.S. Air Force Academy’s FalconSat 2 satellite, which will monitor plasma interactions with the Earth’s upper atmosphere and magnetosphere.

The launch was delayed, then finally cancelled after an oxygen boil-off vent had accidentally been left open. The oxygen was unable to cool the helium pressurant, which then proceeded to evaporate faster than it could be replenished. A main computer issue, probably serious enough to cause a scrub on its own, was also discovered.

This long-anticipated flight was originally expected to be launched in January 2005, however a series of setbacks forced a series of delays, with the flight most recently scheduled to be in early 2006. It was intended to be launched from the Kwajalein atoll in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

The maiden voyage was originally intended to launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California with a Naval Research Laboratory satellite and a Space Services Incorporated space burial payload.

Abducted Richmond Hill, Ontario man walks into police station

Friday, November 3, 2006

A Richmond Hill, Ontario man is currently released after he was abducted and escaped last night.

Chee Kian Jeff Chan, 28, was forced by three people into a black Mercedes SUV (which was caught on security camera) in the parking garage of his condominium at 23 Oneida Cresant in the Yonge Street and High Tech Road area. A small amount of blood was found at the scene. He was dropped off at an unnamed location in Toronto Wednesday night.

The suspects were wearing black clothes and balaclavas covering their faces at the time of the incident. The licence plate number of the Mercedes SUV is not known because there was no plate on the front of the vehicle.

Chan walked into the Major Mackenzie Dr. W. police station, at about 6:45 p.m. last night, suffering from injuries and went to a hospital for examination.

York Regional Police say that he is a poker player, after hearing about a man with the same name that took seventh place at the River Rock Casino Resort near Vancouver, British Columbia on November 19, 2005, earning him $44,753.

No ransom note was received and police believe that it was an extortion attempt.

“He was unaware of a lot of things during his ordeal,” Constable Laurie Perks said. “He didn’t know what they looked like. His vision was concealed and so he therefore didn’t know where he was through most of his ordeal.”

It is believed that Chan’s three captors released him after 28 hours because of the media coverage surrounding his disappearance.

The investigation is still ongoing.

Using A Prepaid Credit Card

Submitted by: Tom Tessin

The prepaid credit card is easy to use and accepted everywhere. The user knows exactly how much money is available on the credit card and cannot overspend. The card has been loaded with money by the user from their bank account and you can add more to it at anytime. This card is especially appreciated by those who are on pension checks as well.

Keeping a budget is very important and when you are doing just that and still using plastic most spenders will let you know that is real joy. The advantages of a Prepaid Credit Card

The prepaid credit card makes it so much easier when you are trying to make purchases, airline reservations, hotel reservations, or reservations for restaurants. Many people need that accessibility but do not want to use a credit system that cost. Today with the economy the way that it is a large charge account is not advisable instead having a Prepaid Credit Card gives you a much bigger advantage.

When looking for a prepaid card, you re going to find that many of them have activation fees, or some sort of fees. Just because you look at the first few cards, and they all have fees, doesn t mean that they all are going to have these fees. There are plenty of cards out there, depending on the bank issuer that has no fees at all.

How do they make money without the fees?

The reason that some banks can make money without the fees is because they can charge the merchants, instead of getting a double dip, where they will charge both of you, the consumer, and the merchant.

As of today, there are hundreds of prepaid cards out there. As long as you look for a card that has a major logo, and it s going to be accepted at every place you shop, you should be okay with finding one. Just make sure that you look for a card that offers either rewards, or if you re looking for one that builds credit, those are around as well. While those are rare, you can find one that will help rebuild your credit.

Prepaid credit cards are a great way to manage your spending, as well as know where all your money is going. Unlike a credit card, where you can spend freely and not know how much is going on, this is a great way to say no to debt for life.

Bank of America declares 1.2 million account records “lost”

Monday, February 28, 2005

Charlotte, North Carolina — One of the biggest domestic banks in the United States, Bank of America, has admitted to losing computer tapes containing 1.2 million federal employee accounts, including the accounts of several U.S. senators, in a statement by the bank. According to the Pentagon, most of the accounts belong to staff and civilians in the Department of Defense. The bank said the tapes were lost in December 2004 as they were being transported to a data back-up centre by a commercial plane.

Currently, the U.S. Secret Service are looking in to the matter, a federal agency whose brief includes investigations of serious financial crime such as this. All parties concerned are worrying about possible identity theft as it contained valuable information such as bank account numbers, names and addresses.

2008 Computex Preview: WiMAX, threat? opportunity?

Thursday, April 17, 2008

2008 Computex Taipei (a.k.a Taipei International Information Technology Show), the second largest IT show in the world, will start on June 3 to 7 at the TWTC Hall 1 & 3, Taipei International Convention Center (TICC), and TWTC Nangang, in conjunction with 2008 WiMAX Expo Taipei, which will start earlier at the Taipei Show Hall 2. With two IT-related industry shows will be concurrently showcased in different venues, it will bring on many convergences and opportunities for networking and mobile-related industries worldwide including Taiwan.

Since the Taipei Computer Association, Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), and Industrial Technology Research Institute preliminary imported the “WiMAX Forum Showcase & Conference” into the TICC, WiMAX-related topics were mostly focused by several worldwide media and industrial elites. In extremity, some technologies and solutions like eSNG, wireless medical care, wireless transmission, and mobile entertainment were showcased there. And the MOEA also signed MOUs with 5 world-class WiMAX companies to help the networking industry last year in Taiwan.

Even though the signing of MOUs and new technologies will bring opportunities for WiMAX-related industries, and the mobile devices will be progressively popular in the future and more slim like an UMPC, but some companies from information security industry were worried about the future trend because of invisible threats on the Internet.

As of “Asia-pacific IT Security Forum” and “IT Security Pavilion” of SecuTech Expo 2008, there were several changes on participation from IT industry, but due to a major impact of “Edison Chen’s photo scandal“, several crisis were exposed with improper habits on modern people when using the Internet.

There were several weak points on IM or P2P software, and USB mass storage devices. For example, Skype, a famous Internet telephony software, progressively became a hacking tool by several fraud groups although several enterprises had awareness on IM software and made several policies to prevent using them. According to a statistic on virus-infected users, even though there were 99% of Microsoft Windows users (infected by viruses), but a minor of 0.03% mobile device (e.g. Windows Mobile, Palm OS, etc.) users shouldn’t be unnoticed. If the infrastructure of WiMAX technology is matured, although it (WiMAX) will bring convergences and opportunities for networking and digital content industries and bring on mobile populations, as the fraud groups updated their crime tools and extended their platform into mobile devices, there will be a lot of risks for mobile and Internet users as they welcomed the WiMAX technology.

It’s a real deal that the WiMAX will bring different kind profits and benefits for different industries, but before the WiMAX became the trend, if Internet users didn’t cultivate proper habits on using the Internet, the WiMAX will still bring on threats for end-users and industries.
