University of Wales to close down after 120 years

Saturday, October 22, 2011

120 years after it was founded, the University of Wales (UoW) will shut down. Already comprised of several institutions, two will merge fully while two more will become independent universities.

With a charter from 1893 and the Prince of Wales as its chancellor, problems began at UoW last year after concerns the head of a Malaysian partner institution, a local pop artist, had non-legitimate qualifications. This was followed by Thailand’s authorities denouncing another UoW partner as illegal, then an investigation in the UK into all the UoW’s foreign ties.

The Quality Assurance Agency said UoW’s overseas checks on foreign institutions were inadequate. The UK Border Agency is investigating a possible visa scam whereby foreign students were sold exam answers for a qualification leading to UoW entry and British visas. Two colleges — Rayat London College and Lampton College — are suspended over the claims.

Trinity St David and Swansea Metropolitan universities are to merge, forming University of Wales: Trinity St David. It is to use the latter’s own royal charter, which is itself 190 years old. Newport and Glyndwr are set to become universities in their own right. The dissolution follows calls from the leaders of rival universities for the end of UoW.

“I warmly welcome the historic decision taken today by the University of Wales Council,” said UoW Vice-Chancellor Professor Medwin Hughes, who will fill the same role for the new University of Wales: Trinity St David. “The transformed University will serve and deliver for Wales.” His counterpart for Newport, Dr Peter Noyes, said “The inevitable end to the story of the University of Wales should not detract from a distinguished history lasting 12 decades. Wales should be sad that this day has come[.]” UoW chairmain Hugh Thomas has resigned.

The Prince of Wales is among past students, having spent a 1969 term there. The institution’s various member organisations at one point included the now-separate Cardiff University.

Podiatrists Do A Lot More Than You Think

By Stewart Wrighter

The field of podiatry is typically one that is not talked about a lot. Most people can name five different medical specialties off the top of their head, but podiatry usually is not one of them. In fact, you may not even know about these types of doctors until you have a bunion or a plantar wart that is painful and needs to be treated. Even when you are sent to a podiatrist to help you with your problem, you probably do not know much about this type of specialty. In the past, when people did know about podiatrists, they made the assumption that they only handled simple cases like corns, calluses and toenail problems. However, the specialty is now much more complicated. Listed below are several of the misconceptions about these doctors.

Many people think that podiatrists are not real doctors, however this is not true. All doctors must start with a four year undergraduate degree. Then everyone has nearly identical classes during the first two years of their graduate education. At that point, medical doctors and podiatrists start concentrating on their area of specialization. Also like medical doctors, podiatrists are required to spend several years as a resident to begin their more advanced training. During this time as a resident, doctors with many different specialties all handle the same types of duties.

Another common misconception about podiatrists is that they only treat easy stuff like toenails and calluses. That used to be the case, but it is not that way any longer. Podiatrists now treat anything that has an influence on your feet, ankle or lower leg. This can include things like fractures, nerve disorders, circulation problems, skin diseases and serious infections. Most podiatrists also spend a lot of time on surgical procedures. Many of the procedures that can be performed in an office are technically considered surgery. However, podiatrists also spend time in more traditional surgical settings as well. They are board certified to be able to perform any kind of foot and ankle surgery.

People that do not know very much about what podiatrists do have an altered perception of their specialty. The usually think that their only function is to have you buy specialized, expensive shoe inserts. Due to the structure of the foot and the amount of weight and pressure that is put on it with each step, there are times when special inserts are warranted. However, as we have discussed above, there are many other problems that a podiatrist has to deal with.

One final misconception that a lot of people have is that if there is an issue with a bone in the foot the best option is to see a regular orthopedic surgeon. While those doctors should have the ability to handle these issues too, chances are that they are not nearly as familiar with them as a podiatrist would be. Do you think it is a better idea to have your foot operated on by someone who only works on feet or someone who also splits their time on arms, legs and fingers too?

Peter Forsberg scores two in win over the Boston Bruins

Friday, November 25, 2005

In Friday’s National Hockey League contest between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Boston Bruins at the TD Banknorth Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. Peter Forsberg almost netted his first “hat trick” in a Flyers uniform. At one point during the game, he had been given credit for three goals, however an official review took his first goal away, and officially he scored his eighth goal of the season at 13:06 in the second period with assists from Simon Gagne and former Hartford Whaler Sami Kapanen.

To date, there have been 24 hat tricks (3 or more goals in one game) in this NHL season.

Forsberg, a 32 year old native of Sweden, recently joined the Flyers for the 2005-2006 season after spending the NHL lockout season with Modo, Sweden.

The Flyers ended up winning the game 5-3, adding yet another loss to an already disappointing Bruins season.

Israel to build new settlements in West Bank

Sunday, March 13, 2011

Israel announced Sunday that it plans to build several hundred new housing facilities in the occupied West Bank, days after several Israelis were killed in an attack on Friday.

According to officials, a meeting on Saturday of a government committee resulted in the decision to build up to 500 new housing units, all within existing settlements. The new buildings are to be constructed in areas that Israel expects to retain control of in the event of any potential peace accord with Palestine.

A Palestinian spokesperson said that Israel’s decision was “wrong and unacceptable and will only create problems.” The building of settlements by Israel is widely criticized; in February fourteen of the fifteen United Nations Security Council members, with the US the only exception, supported a resolution that would demand Israel stop further construction.

The announcement of the new buildings came days after five Israelis were stabbed to death on Friday night, in an attack suspected to be of Palestinian origin. In response to the attack, residents of the area had asked the Israeli government to build new housing facilities.

The attacks were referenced by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said in a statement that he had “noticed that several countries that always hasten to the U.N. Security Council in order to condemn Israel, the state of the Jews, for planning a house in some locality, or for laying some tiles somewhere, have been dilatory in sharply condemning the murder of Jewish infants.”

Russian territory expands by 4.5 square kilometres after seismic activity

Saturday, November 14, 2009

According to scientists, the land territory of Russia has expanded by about 4.5 square kilometres within the last few years in the Far East due to seismic and volcanic activity.

The gained land was recorded in the Sakhalin Peninsula. Boris Levin, head of the Institute for Sea Geology and Geophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that the increase happened primarily due to two seismic events.

The first, in August of 2007, was when a heavy 6.8 earthquake near the city of Nevelsk in the Far East raised about three square kilometres of seabed above the level of the water. The second was in June of this year, when the Sarychev Peak volcano on the Matua Island erupted. GPS trackers on the Matua island were used to monitor the eruption, and the volcano changed its shape, adding 1.5 square kilometres of land, scientists said.

Geologists also reported that the Kuril Islands nearby were slowly moving towards mainland Russia at an estimated rate of eighteen milimetres per year.

Bad Credit Used Car Loans Advantages Of Comparing Auto Loan Lenders

By Carrie Reeder

When buying a used car with bad credit, do not begin the car buying process without doing your homework. Sadly, many car buyers are taken advantage of by dealerships. A few car dealerships advertise fresh start programs intended to help bad credit people rebuild credit. Instead of offering fair rates, some dealership charge excessive fees to innocent buyers. Thus, it is crucial to compare auto lenders before finalizing the car purchase.

How Buying a Car Helps Improve Credit

Many people with poor credit and no credit choose to finance a vehicle in an attempt to improve their credit rating. The key to re-establishing or building credit is opening new accounts and maintaining a good payment history. Those with bad credit can attest to how difficult it is to obtain credit cards and other types of loans. For this matter, secured credit accounts become necessary. Because auto loans are secured, these are easy to qualify for.

Once you have been approved for an auto loan, strive to make all payments on time and never skip a payment. Each month that you make a regular payment, this will reflect on your credit report. In time, your score will rise, thus making it possible to attain additional lines of credit.

Bad Credit Auto Loan Lenders

If you’ve done your homework beforehand, you likely realize that bad credit auto loan lenders offer the best rates to individuals with poor credit. Unlike dealerships that offer excessive rates, bad credit lenders have a reputation for approving loans with fair rates. The objective is not to profit off of someone’s misfortune, rather to help people re-establish credit.

How to Avoid Shady Auto Lenders

Shady auto lenders are always on the prowl. Smart car buyers who obtain quotes from different lenders rarely fall prey to their tactics. However, if you accept the first auto loan offer received, and neglect shopping around, you may pay unreasonable fees.

The single, most effective approach to avoiding a shady lender involves making loan comparisons. For quick and instant comparisons, complete a quote request with an online auto broker. Simply submit information regarding credit rating, income, and desired loan amount. Within minutes, the broker will remit at least four quotes from different lenders.

Latin American Drug dealer Beira-Mar’s lawyers arrested

Monday, November 15, 2004

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — Two lawyers of accused drug dealer Luiz Fernando da Costa (also known as Fernando Beira-Mar) were arrested Sunday November 14 in a restaurant located at Rio de Janeiro city in Brazil. They have been accused of bribing Brazilian federal police officers.

Luiz Fernando da Costa, known as Fernando Beira-Mar or Fernandinho Beira-Mar, is one of the biggest drug dealers of Latin America according to police. Beira-Mar was arrested by the Colombian army at April 20-21, 2001, in a FARC camp located at a forest near Colombia and Venezuela and then transferred to Brazil where he is been in prison until now.

According to officers the lawyers had offered R$200,000 (US$71,658.9) to police officers asking them to release Marcos José Monteiro Carneiro, another man accused of being a drug dealer.

Scientists report chemotherapy cocktail may cause adult women to grow new egg cells

Wednesday, December 7, 2016

Chemotherapy is usually associated with a collection of side effects ranging from digestive problems to hair loss, but a study published this week in Human Reproduction demonstrated that female cancer patients may find they have something in common with much younger women in one specific area — their ovaries.

Scientists from the University of Edinburgh examined donated ovarian tissue from fourteen female cancer patients, most of whom had Hodgkin lymphoma, and compared it to tissue from healthy women. They found the samples from women who had been treated with a specific chemotherapeutic regimen known as ABVD not only contained greater numbers of dormant ova — egg cells — than those from women treated with harsher regimens but also more than samples from healthy women. ABVD is named for combining several drugs known as adriamycin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine.

These reproductive cells were not merely more plentiful in ABVD patients. They also appeared immature, “new” in the words of lead researcher Evelyn Telfer. This challenges the conventional belief that girls are born with all the ova they will ever have and the numbers can only go down as the cells are either used up by the reproductive cycle or succumb to damage or natural aging. However, further research is needed to confirm this. The study covered relatively few patients by scientific standards, and David Albertini of the Center for Human Reproduction in New York has suggested the cells may not actually be freshly grown. Instead, they may have always been there and were merely rendered more detectable by ABVD treatment.

The ability to grow new egg cells may have significant implications for women in Western societies, many of whom postpone childbearing to establish careers, sometimes into their late thirties or forties. However, Telfer warns against making use of these findings too soon: “There’s so much we don’t know about the ovary. We have to be very cautious about jumping to clinical applications.”

The experiments had been discussed earlier this year at the annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology.

Wikinews interviews Darcy Richardson, Democratic Party presidential challenger to Barack Obama

Friday, November 25, 2011

U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate Darcy Richardson of Florida took some time to answer a few questions from Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Richardson, 55, is a political activist that helped form the New Democrats in 1989 and founded the progressive Battleground Blog earlier this year. He is also a political historian, and has authored six books covering third parties and presidential elections, including A Nation Divided: The 1968 Presidential Campaign (2002). His current work, The Spirit of ’76: Eugene McCarthy’s Struggle for Open Politics, chronicles the late Democratic Senator Eugene McCarthy’s 1976 presidential campaign for which he volunteered. Richardson admires McCarthy, and served as manager for his 1988 presidential run. Recently, Richardson advised Brian Moore’s Socialist Party USA presidential campaign in 2008.

In addition, Richardson himself has sought political office, albeit unsuccessfully. In 1980, he ran for Pennsylvania Auditor General, and in 1988, vied for one of Pennsylvania’s U.S. Senate seats as a member of the Consumer Party. Last year, he ran for Lieutenant Governor of Florida as the running mate of gubernatorial candidate Farid Khavari.

Richardson has criticized President Barack Obama’s policies for being too similar to those of former President George W. Bush. He hoped to convince several prominent progressives to challenge Obama in the Democratic primaries, but none were available to do so. Last month, Richardson decided to begin a campaign himself and announced through his Battleground Blog that he would challenge Obama in the Democratic Party primaries as a progressive candidate. So far, he has qualified for the New Hampshire primary in January and the Missouri primary in February. In an interview with the Independent Political Report, Richardson proclaimed his campaign slogan as “no fourth term for George W. Bush.”
